WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD FREEFORM PHYSIO & PILATESJanuary 13, 2023News2023 brings a number of new businesses opening in the downtown core and we are very excited to start showcasing them all through our ‘welcome to neighbourhood blog’.
Kicking off 2023 with Freeform Physio and Pilates, a movement-focused physiotherapy clinic that joins the BIA as an Associate Member for 2023.
We got to chat with Karen Boyle, the owner, and operator of Freeform Physio and Pilates, and asked some important questions about her business, her goals, and her best advice for a new business owner in Downtown Squamish.
Tell us about you and your business?
FreeForm Physio and Pilates is a movement-focused physiotherapy clinic. FreeForm offers personalized, one-on-one assessments and treatments in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The services provided include physiotherapy, clinical Pilates (using Pilates apparatus), functional dry needling, soft tissue therapy, manual therapy, rehabilitation for runners, concussion, and vestibular therapy. As a physiotherapist, I strive to help individuals discover the root cause of their pain and optimize their movement, so they can continue to enjoy an active lifestyle, injury free. As for me, I value creativity when it comes to rehabilitation, I emphasize movement and functional exercise over solely passive therapy, I believe education is a key part of therapy, I encourage collaboration with my clients, and above all else, I believe in whole person care.
What inspired you to want to open a business in downtown Squamish?
It has been nice to see downtown Squamish expanding over the last few years, with many new businesses moving into 2nd and 3rd Avenue, and I wanted to be a part of that growth as well!
What do you love most about having a business in Squamish?
The business community here is incredibly supportive. I am the sole practitioner of my clinic and have built a great referral network and created some great friendships along the way. The culture in Squamish has also made treating clients here very pleasurable. The community of Squamish plays hard, they cherish work-life balance (and encourage me to do so as well), and they prioritize their physical and mental well-being – all of my favorite attributes of a client!
What is your best piece of advice for any business owner?
I am going to share three. Entrepreneurship is hard, but don’t expect to do it all on your own. Delegate when you can, be open to advise, and don’t be afraid to ask for help! Celebrate every win, no matter how small you might think it is. And to expand on the above, put your blinders on, don’t compare yourself to other people in the business world, stick to your values and goals (do you even need/want to do what they are doing?), and remind yourself that everything takes time (be proud of where you are in the present moment).
What is your favorite memory of your business thus far or what are you looking forward to the most?
My favorite memory of my business thus far was signing the lease for my new clinic space downtown. It was the biggest, scariest leap I’ve taken, but it’s been worth it! The feedback I have received from my clients has been so positive and heartwarming.
Tell me what other stores you like to frequent in downtown Squamish?
Pearls and Random and Co for clothes, house items, and funky jewelry. Grateful Gift Shop for cute gifts and trinkets. Zephyr Cafe/Fox and Oak for all of my coffee needs. Cliffside Cider for a post work beverage and burger!
